Charles Heinrich Haushalter
Youth
Charles was born on March 27, 1880 in Water Valley, Hamburg, New York, United States, to George Heinrich Haushalter (1852-1944) and Mary Louise (Heinrich) Haushalter (1853-1926).[1][2] He grew up on the Haushalter farm, helping with farm chores as every farm child did.[3]
Logging in Coeur d'Alene
Family records indicate that Charlie worked as a logger in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho from 1901-1907. He was listed as a laborer on the family farm in 1900.[4] There are numerous pictures in the family archive,[5] some of which can be seen on this profile, that show him working as a logger during this time. The family notes say he was "given" "homestead land" in 1907. However, his 1907 patent for the land[6] Indicates he bought the land that year. Although it's possible he bought out what was originally a homestead in order to sell it to move back home to take care of the family farm. He loved living in Idaho, and always regretted having to return home to take charge of the family farm when his grandfather became incapacitated.[7]
Return to Water Valley
Charlie married Anna Louise Zdunek (abt.1885-1959) on 12 Jun 1912.[8][9] They lived on and farmed the Haushalter land in Water Valley, New York for many decades. They had three children:
- Doris Virginia (1914-2003)
- June Augusta (1920-2025)
- Carl Henry (1925-2012)
Charles was an incredibly hard worker. The 1950 Census records him as having worked 80 hours in the past week--28 hours more than anyone else recorded. He was seventy years old at the time.[10] And his descendants have no trouble believing that. He was also extremely community-oriented. He helped organize the local farmers into a co-op to get better prices for their crops at market.[11][12] The town of Hamburg appointed him a fire warden year after year,[13][14] and he advocated for putting in a sidewalk near the Water Valley School and stopping motorists from speeding past the children there.[15] He grew prize-winning crops[16][17] and raised award-winning barred chickens[18][19] for the Erie County Fair.
Charles was the last one in the family to actively farm the Haushalter land in Hamburg, NY. In the 1960s, he and his grandson, John Casler, grew strawberries to raise money for John's Harvard tuition. But by the 1990s, theft and destruction of crops by careless neighbors made it impossible to even lease the land out for farming.
Death
Charles died peacefully in his sleep at home on the farm[20] in October of 1963.[21][22] He is buried with his wife and many extended family members in Prospect Lawn Cemetery in Hamburg, New York.[23]
